I’m all about looking forward: the next gadget, the newest hotspot in town, I’m on it like CNN on Trumps latest daft tweets. However, every now and again it’s nice to enjoy and appreciate some of the more traditional local business’. One of which is the iconic Standun store in Spiddal. Only a fifteen minute drive from Galway city the beautiful drive along the Wild Atlantic Way, the store is well worth a visit.

Expect to see plenty of tourist’s during your visit but it’s got plenty of reasons for locals to check it out too. Standún was founded in 1946 by May and Máirtín Standún and is currently under the stewardship of the couples grand-daughters the beautiful Laragh and Cliona Standún. The stylish pair have an eye for fashion and this is reflected on the rails. As my friends or anyone that get’s the Galway papers know I love a good blazer and I was spoilt for choice on my most recent visit, eventually picking up a very smart navy “Stones” fitted blazer. With brands like McGee ……you’re sure to find something to impress.

The store is also renowned for its collection of Aran Sweaters. The iconic sweaters and cardigans can be purchased either handknit or machine knit, in a variey of styles. I am delighted to have finally added to my wardrobe for the winter.

I was aware of the clothes but the home and giftware section really impressed me. I will never be stuck for a present again after pursuing through the shelves. With brands such as Waterford Crystal, John Rocha, Lismore, Bog Buddies, Micolas Mosse, Galway Crystal, Belleek Pottery, Newbridge Silverware, Vera Wang to name but a few.

With amazing views from the car park and a delightful café in the shop Standùn is well worth a vist.

I received no payment for this post, it is part of a series promoting local business which I believe deserve recognition.
