Fashion is fascinating. In many ways it’s like dating, in that the harder you try the less likely you are to succeed. Looking great like me always helps but a keen eye for what looks good on you is critical. Your Facebook page is basically a vain attempt to make your life look remotely interesting, but in there your clothes paint an honest picture that rarely lies. Clothes can reflect your mood, your intentions and even showcase your level of self-esteem. Trends come and go but style never goes out of fashion, hence there are a few key staples in your wardrobe will ensure you always look the part.
Here are five essentials that in my opinion every guy should own, the foundation to a good wardrobe;
1. Navy / Blue Blazer - According to Jeremy Hackett of the London designers “The blue blazer is a man’s LBD”. Dependable, versatile and timeless, it is actually the sartorial equivalent of Andrea Pirlo when you think about it. Wear jeans to dress down or a pair of chinos to dress up.
2 Classic crisp white shirt - This will never go out of style, ideal for all kinds of occasion, job interviews, weddings, funerals or just a night out. The important thing is that it’s a crisp clean shirt that looks like it’s straight out off a Daz advert, not as dull as Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday during the international break.
3 Wristwatch - A gentleman wears a watch, end of story. The ultimate accessory, the right time piece can convey personality, outlook and self-esteem with grace and elegance. You don’t need to be a rapper or a music mogul to have a standout piece, watches are an investment. A confident flick of the wrist always beats shuffling through pockets.
4. Straight Leg Jeans - Some guys simply aren’t brave enough or built for skinny jeans. That’s not a problem. Every bloke under seventy owns a pair of jeans of some style or other and has occasion to wear them, so make sure you have at least one good pair. Don’t go shopping alone, there’s so many pitfalls out there so a woman’s eye might come in handy. Length is important, as the ladies will tell you. Is the rear view appealing? Does the crotch make you look like a hamster on a chilly day? All questions that need answering.
5. Grey Suit - If the Blazer is a man’s LBD then a fitted suit is like lingerie for the opposite sex. Mainly due to Facebook the days of having one suit and occasionally wearing different shirts to events is now gone. Guys need a selection of suits and in the main, at long last, are becoming more adventurous with colour selections. However, a grey suit should always be an essential hanging in every guy’s wardrobe. Accessorise to become event appropriate but with a slick grey tailored suit you’ll never be caught short for a formal occasion again.
